Manchester City and Real Madrid played out a thrilling 4-4 draw at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, with the visitors progressing to the Champions League semi-finals on away goals. City had won the first leg 2-1 and looked on course to qualify for the last four when they led Wednesday's game 3-1 with just 15 minutes remaining.
However, a late brace from Rodrygo forced the game into extra-time and substitute Karim Benzema then netted a 95th-minute penalty to seemingly send Real through. Yet City refused to give up and Riyad Mahrez's 117th-minute goal took the game to penalties.
City missed three of their five spot-kicks, with Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan all failing to convert. Real, meanwhile, were perfect from the spot, with Rodrygo, Dani Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez and Benzema all scoring. The result means Real will face Barcelona in the semi-finals, while City's hopes of winning the Champions League for the first time have been dashed once again.
