Ashes 2023: England Bowled Out for 68 in Third Morning Against Australia
Match Report: England vs Australia 4th Test at Old Trafford, Manchester
England Collapse as Australia Take Control of Ashes Series
England's hopes of squaring the Ashes series took a significant blow on the third morning of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. Resuming on an overnight score of 22-2, the home side crumbled to a paltry 68 all out in just 26.4 overs. Australia's pace attack dominated proceedings, with Mitchell Starc claiming 4-37 and Pat Cummins taking 3-23.
After losing openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees cheaply on day two, England's batting lineup failed to provide any resistance. Joe Root, the England captain, was dismissed for 15, while Jonny Bairstow fell for a duck. Sam Billings, Ben Stokes, and Stuart Broad all contributed scores in the single figures, leaving Australia with a commanding lead of 196 runs.
The Australian bowlers were relentless in their attack, exploiting the favorable conditions. Starc and Cummins consistently found the edge, while Cameron Green and Scott Boland provided excellent support. Nathan Lyon, the off-spinner who has been a key figure for Australia throughout the Ashes series, claimed the wicket of Liam Livingstone to wrap up the innings.
The defeat leaves England facing an uphill battle to retain the Ashes. Australia require just a draw in the remaining two Tests to clinch the series, while England need to win both to draw level. The fifth and final Test will take place at The Oval from September 11-15.
