Max Verstappen took a dramatic pole position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix sprint race at Imola, edging out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by just 0.093 seconds in a thrilling qualifying session.

The Red Bull driver set a time of 1:15.084 on his final lap to pip Leclerc, who had looked set to take pole after setting the fastest time in Q1 and Q2.

Sergio Perez was third for Red Bull, just 0.145 seconds behind Verstappen, while Carlos Sainz was fourth for Ferrari, ahead of the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen's pole position is his first of the season and the first for Red Bull since the 2021 Mexican Grand Prix.

The Dutchman will be hoping to convert his pole position into victory in tomorrow's sprint race, which will determine the starting grid for Sunday's main race.
